What AI Actually Knows (and What It Doesn't)

    Watch the video

AI learned everything it knows from a giant pile of information we gave it: a huge chunk of the internet, books, articles, and conversations. It read through all of it and learned the patterns of how we write and talk. That pile is where its knowledge comes from.

Now here's the important part. That pile has a cutoff date, and it depends on the model. At the time of recording, OpenAI's ChatGPT 5.5 had a knowledge cutoff of December 1, 2025, and Claude's Opus 4.8 had a cutoff of January 2026. Anything after that date, the model simply doesn't know on its own.

It also means AI doesn't know anything about your personal life, because your life was never in that pile. So if you want better answers about your own situation, you have to give it context about yourself.

    Do this

Next time you ask AI for anything technical, tell it to search first. The prompt I use: "This is a technical step. Please search the internet for the most up-to-date steps." It won't be perfect every time, but it sharply increases accuracy.
