What is an API?

Lesson 3-4 · Watch on YouTube (opens in a new tab)

An API is how one piece of software talks to another, like a drive-thru window.

    • You can only order what is on the menu, so if a software's API does not allow something, nothing connected to it can do it either.
    • Connectors in Claude use APIs behind the scenes, so you usually do not have to write code.
    • An API key works like a password, so never paste it in a public place or send it to someone you do not trust.
    • On usage-based APIs, anyone with your key can spend your money.

Example: Search for your CRM's name plus the word "API" to find out whether AI could ever plug into it and update a deal for you.
